In today’s fast-paced world, the definition of success has dramatically shifted. Moral character, spiritual depth, and ethical integrity are rarely seen as measures of greatness. Instead, material glitter has become the sole standard of worth. This transformation in human perception is not new. The Qur’an pointed out this weakness of human nature centuries ago. Surah al-Baqarah (2:212) expresses this reality in timeless words:
﴿زُيِّنَ لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا وَيَسْخَرُونَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا ۘ وَالَّذِينَ اتَّقَوْا فَوْقَهُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ يَرْزُقُ مَنْ يَشَاءُ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ﴾
(Al-Baqarah 2:212)
This verse was revealed regarding certain chiefs of Quraysh who mocked the poor yet sincere believers. But the message extends far beyond its historical context. It stands as a universal mirror for every society that evaluates humans not by virtue, but by wealth, status, and worldly power.
Even today, this mindset persists. We estimate a person’s worth through their clothes, cars, houses, brand labels, and bank balances. A poor yet honest individual is often looked down upon, while someone possessing material affluence automatically receives respect. This mentality is exactly what the Qur’an identifies as the “adornment” of worldly life—a deceptive charm that blinds the soul.
The Qur’an teaches that the splendour of this world is temporary and superficial. It is a test, not a reality. Those deprived of spiritual insight fall prey to this illusion. Hence they ridicule the believers—those who choose simplicity, truth, humility, and God-consciousness over superficial display. But God’s verdict is entirely different:
“Those who are mindful of God shall be above them on the Day of Resurrection.”
Worldly honours are temporary, artificial, and constantly changing. But the ranks of the Hereafter are permanent and eternal. Those considered insignificant in this world may be elevated in the next, while those revered here may be humbled there.
The final portion of the verse—
“And Allah grants provision to whom He wills, without measure”—
reveals an important truth about sustenance. Divine provision is not tied to material causes alone. God grants some people little yet blesses them with contentment, and grants others abundance yet leaves them restless. Understanding this spiritual reality protects one from jealousy, arrogance, and despair.
The most crucial lesson for today’s world is to reject superficial standards of judgment. We should not evaluate a person by what they possess, but by what they are: their ethics, sincerity, honesty, compassion, and God-consciousness. Faith, truthfulness, trustworthiness, piety, and humanity—these are treasures that never devalue and never depend on shifting worldly conditions.
If we internalize the message of this single verse, we will no longer belittle anyone, nor lose ourselves in the deceptive glitter of this world. The verse reminds us that worldly life is a passing moment; the real honour is the honour granted by God—reserved for those who live with faith and righteousness.
دنیا کی فریب دہ زینت اور ایمان کی حقیقی وقعت

زندگی کی اس دوڑتی بھاگتی دنیا میں انسان کا معیارِ کامیابی بدلتا جا رہا ہے۔ اب کردار، اخلاق اور روحانی بلندی نہیں، بلکہ ظاہری چمک دمک ہی سب کچھ شمار ہونے لگی ہے۔ ہمارے معاشرتی رویوں میں یہ تبدیلی کوئی نئی بات نہیں۔ قرآن نے صدیوں قبل انسان کی اسی کمزوری کی نشاندہی کی تھی۔ سورۂ بقرہ کی آیت 212 اسی حقیقت کو یوں بیان کرتی ہے:
زُيِّنَ لِلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا وَيَسْخَرُونَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا ۘ وَالَّذِينَ اتَّقَوْا فَوْقَهُمْ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ ۗ وَاللَّهُ يَرْزُقُ مَنْ يَشَاءُ بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ (البقرہ: 212)
یہ آیت صرف عرب کے اُن سرداروں کے لئے نہیں اتری تھی جو غریب مگر ایمان دار مسلمانوں کو حقیر سمجھتے تھے، بلکہ یہ ہر دور کے انسان کے لئے آئینہ ہے، خصوصاً اُس دور کے لیے جہاں دولت اور حیثیت کو انسان کی اصل وقعت پر ترجیح دی جاتی ہے۔
آج بھی ہمارے معاشرے میں یہی رویہ نمایاں ہے۔ ہم کسی انسان کے کردار کے بجائے اس کے لباس، گاڑی، مکان، برانڈ اور بینک بیلنس سے اس کی قیمت لگاتے ہیں۔ غریب مگر سچے انسان کو کم تر سمجھا جاتا ہے، جبکہ مال و منصب والے کو خود بخود “عزت والا” مان لیا جاتا ہے۔ یہی وہ ذہنیت ہے جسے قرآن نے “دنیا کی مزین فریب کاری” قرار دیا ہے۔
قرآن واضح کرتا ہے کہ دنیا کی چمک دمک کوئی دائمی حقیقت نہیں۔ یہ صرف امتحان ہے۔ جنہیں ایمان کی روشنی نصیب نہیں ہوتی وہ اسی فریب میں پھنس جاتے ہیں۔ یہی وجہ ہے کہ وہ ایمان والے، سچ بولنے والے اور سادگی اختیار کرنے والے لوگوں کا مذاق اڑاتے ہیں۔ مگر اللہ تعالیٰ کا فیصلہ کچھ اور ہے: ”اور جو لوگ تقویٰ والے ہیں وہ قیامت کے دن ان سے بلند ہوں گے“
دنیا کی عزتیں عارضی، مصنوعی اور بدلتی رہتی ہیں، مگر آخرت کے درجات ہمیشہ رہنے والے ہیں۔ وہاں بڑے وہ ہوں گے جو آج کے معاشرے میں چھوٹے سمجھے جاتے ہیں، اور چھوٹے وہ ہوں گے جو دنیا میں بڑے کہلاتے ہیں۔
آیت کا آخری حصہ: ”اور اللہ جسے چاہے بے حساب رزق دیتا ہے “
رزق کی ایک اہم حقیقت بیان کرتا ہے۔ اللہ کا رزق صرف ظاہری اسباب پر منحصر نہیں۔ اللہ بہتوں کو کم دے کر مطمئن رکھتا ہے، اور بہتوں کو زیادہ دے کر بے سکون کر دیتا ہے۔ یہ راز سمجھنے والا کبھی حسد اور مایوسی کا شکار نہیں ہوتا۔
آج کے دور کا سب سے اہم سبق یہی ہے کہ ہم ظاہری معیاروں کو ترک کریں۔ کسی شخص کے پاس کیا ہے، یہ نہیں دیکھیں؛ بلکہ وہ کیا ہے، اس کے اخلاق کیا ہیں، اس کا کردار کتنا صاف ہے—یہ دیکھیں۔ اس لئے کہ ایمان، صداقت، امانت، تقویٰ اور انسانیت وہ خوبیاں ہیں جو کسی بحران کی زد میں نہیں آتیں، نہ زمانے کے بدلنے سے کم ہوتی ہیں۔
اگر ہم اس ایک آیت کو سمجھ لیں، تو نہ ہم دوسروں کو حقیر جانیں گے، نہ خود دنیا کی چکاچوند میں کھوئیں گے۔ یہ آیت ہمیں یاد دلاتی ہے کہ دنیا چند لمحوں کی بات ہے؛ اصل عزت وہ ہے جو اللہ کے ہاں ملے، اور وہ عزت ایمان اور تقویٰ والوں کا مقدر ہے۔
