Lesson 01 The Status and Rank of the Shia . Shia—The Foremost Community Narration: Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reports: I asked the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) about the saying of Allah the Almighty: “And the foremost are the foremost. They are the ones brought near, in Gardens of bliss.” (Surah Al-Waqi'ah, 56:10-12) The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: Gabriel (peace be upon him) said: "This refers to Ali and his Shia. They are the ones who will be the first to enter Paradise and will be among those brought near to Allah through His grace." A Message of Leadership for the Youth Young people must develop a deep understanding of what true precedence means. It is a journey of striving forward in the path of Allah—one that aims not just at worldly success, but more importantly at spiritual elevation and attaining divine pleasure. Youth should make the most of their prime years by choosing this path of advancement so they may be counted among those close to God and succeed in the Hereafter. 1. The Concept of Precedence in the Qur'an Allah Almighty gives immense importance to precedence and initiative in the Qur'an. It is a key to both worldly progress and eternal success. Verse: "And the foremost are the foremost. They are the ones brought near, in Gardens of bliss." (Surah Al-Waqi'ah, 56:10-12) 2. The Precedence of Imam Ali (a.s.) and His Role Imam Ali (peace be upon him) holds a distinguished position in terms of precedence. From his youth, he dedicated his life to seeking the pleasure of Allah. His advancement was not confined to personal elevation, but served as a luminous example for the Muslim Ummah. Hadith: "Ali will be the first among my nation to enter Paradise, and he is the foremost among the foremost." (Sahih Muslim) 3. The Role of the Shia in Precedence The Shia are not merely claimants; they actively follow the principles of Imam Ali (a.s.). The Qur'an and Hadith repeatedly affirm that those who strive to advance for Allah’s pleasure will attain the highest ranks in Paradise. Allama Tabataba’i (may Allah have mercy on him) emphasizes in his exegesis al-Mizān: "The true Shia are those who live their lives according to the guidance of Imam Ali (a.s.), and this is the real meaning of precedence." 4. Sayings of Scholars Shaykh Mufīd (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The greatest treasure a youth possesses is his faith and actions. If these are aligned with the right path, he will attain success in this world and precedence in the Hereafter." Allama Iqbal (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The true youth are those who do not surrender to circumstances, but use their faith and actions to change the world. By walking the path of precedence, they achieve success in both this world and the next." 5. Spiritual Advancement Through Precedence Precedence is not merely about material or worldly success; its real aim is spiritual growth. Youth must understand that worldly achievements only have true value when they serve the purpose of earning Allah’s pleasure and success in the Hereafter. Imam Ali (a.s.) is reported to have said: "The goal of your precedence should not be wealth and possessions of the world, but your actions should be for the sake of Allah’s pleasure, which can elevate you to the highest ranks in Paradise." 1. Blessed Are Our Shia A Reflection on the Saying of Imam Musa al-Kazim (a.s.) قالَ الامامُ مُوسَى بْنَ جَعفَرٍ عليه السلام: طُوبى لِشيعَتِنا المُتَمَسّكينَ بِحُبِّنا فى غَيْبَةِ قائِمِنا الثّابِتينَ عَلى مُوالاتِنا وَ الْبَراءَةِ مِن أَعْدائِنا أُولئِكَ مِنّا وَ نَحْنُ مِنْهُمْ قَد رَضُوا بِنا أَئِمَّةً وَ رَضينا بِهِمْ شيعَةً وَ طُوبى لَهُمْ، هُمْ واللّه ِ مَعَنا فى دَرَجَتِنا يَوْمَ القِيامَةِ. The Noble Saying of the Imam: Imam Musa ibn Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “Glad tidings be to our Shia, those who hold firmly to our love during the occultation of our Qa'im, those who remain steadfast in their loyalty to us and in their disassociation from our enemies. They are from us, and we are from them. They have accepted us as their Imams, and we have accepted them as our true Shia. Glad tidings be to them! By Allah, on the Day of Resurrection they shall be with us, in our rank.” (Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 52, p. 146) Explanation of the Hadith: In Islamic teachings, love for the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) and belief in their Imamate is one of the central principles of faith. This powerful hadith from Imam Musa al-Kazim (a.s.) highlights the dignity and responsibility of being a true Shia, particularly in the era of the occultation of Imam al-Mahdi (a.j.). This hadith is a great divine promise and glad tidings for those Shia who: 1. Remain steadfast in their love for the Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.). 2. Remain loyal even during the occultation of the Imam. 3. Publicly and privately disassociate from the enemies of Ahl al-Bayt. This is not only a declaration of faith but also a call to action and perseverance. It is a manifesto of spiritual, ethical, and social responsibilities for the followers of Ahl al-Bayt during the time of occultation. Blessed are our Shia who, during the occultation of our Qa'im (a.s.), remain firm in their love for us, steadfast in their loyalty to our leadership, and dissociated from our enemies. They are of us, and we are of them. They accepted us as their leaders, and we accept them as our true followers. Glad tidings to them! By Allah, on the Day of Judgment, they will be with us in our rank. Support from the Qur'an: “O you who have believed, be patient and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may succeed.” (Surah Aal-e-Imran, 3:200) This verse emphasizes the same principles of endurance, resilience, vigilance, and piety that Imam Musa al-Kazim (a.s.) speaks of in his noble saying. Light from Other Traditions: 1. Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq (a.s.) said:“Whoever dies while awaiting our Qa'im (a.s.), it is as if he died a martyr in the path of Allah.” (Bihar al-Anwar, vol. 52) 2. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) said:“After me, a time will come when our Shia will remain during the occultation of our Ahl al-Bayt. They will hold on to religion as if holding a burning coal in their hands. Their reward is Paradise.” Moral and Intellectual Points: 1. True love means obedience, not just emotions. 2. Loyalty and awareness during the occultation define a real Shia. 3. Disassociation (bara’ah) from falsehood is a part of faith. 4. The companionship of Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.) in the Hereafter is a status earned through action and sincerity. ________________________________________ Lessons for the Youth: 1. Recognize Your Identity: You are the soldiers of Imam Mahdi (a.j.). Your life should represent his mission. Therefore, your words and actions must be in harmony. 2. Gain Knowledge and Insight: Understanding theology, the history of Ahl al-Bayt, Qur’anic teachings, and Islamic jurisprudence is essential for young people so they can avoid misguidance. 3. Be Representatives of the Imam in Society: Promote the message of the Ahl al-Bayt through good character, service, justice, and piety. 4. Use Modern Tools Wisely: Leverage social media, education, literature, and culture to keep the message of the Imam alive. Lesson Three The Path to Salvation – Ali (a.s) and His Followers قالَ رسولُ اللّهِ ﷺ: "هذَا وَ شِیعَتُهُ هُمُ الْفَائِزُونَ" The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: "This one and his followers are the successful ones." Narrated by Ibn Mas‘ūd (r.a), the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) placed his hand on the shoulder of Imam Ali (a.s) and declared: "This Ali and his Shi‘a (true followers) are the ones who will attain salvation." This was not a casual remark—it was a spiritual proclamation, a practical guide to salvation, and a timeless introduction to the path of true success. Shi‘a and the Successful: Meaning and Significance Shi‘a, in its linguistic sense, refers to followers, supporters, and like-minded individuals. Here, it refers to those who adopt Ali’s (a.s) faith, character, knowledge, and justice as their guiding principles. Fā'izūn (the successful ones) is a comprehensive Qur'anic term, meaning: Triumphant, saved, dwellers of Paradise, and honored in the Hereafter. Qur'anic Criteria for Salvation • True Faith and Righteous Deeds: "Certainly, the believers have succeeded." (Al-Mu’minūn: 1) • Salvation in the Afterlife: "Whoever is kept away from Hellfire and admitted into Paradise, he indeed is successful." (Āl ‘Imrān: 185) • Love for Ahl al-Bayt (a.s): "Say: I do not ask you any reward for this, except love for my near ones." (Ash-Shūrā: 23) Ali (a.s) and His Shi‘a: A Living Model of Qur'anic Salvation Qur’anic & Moral Values Ali (a.s) and His Followers Absolute faith in Tawḥīd and justice Strength in faith “Gate of Knowledge” and seekers of truth Pursuit of knowledge and insight Standing against oppressors, siding with the oppressed Upholding justice Devotion, moral purity, spiritual excellence Asceticism and piety Embodiment of love for the Prophet (ﷺ) Love for the Prophet and his family (a.s) The Universal Message of the Hadith in the Modern Era In today’s world: • Ignorance, injustice, and prejudice are widespread • Humanity is deeply wounded • Justice is bought and sold, principles are broken, and truth is buried In such times, the voice of the Prophet (ﷺ) echoes again: "Ali and his followers are the truly successful!" This is not a sectarian slogan, but a universal call for all of humanity. Who Is a True Follower of Ali (a.s)? 1. One who stands with the oppressed—not the oppressors 2. One who sacrifices for justice—never bows for personal gain 3. One who speaks with reason and knowledge—resists ignorance 4. One who honors the poor, orphans, women, and the enslaved 5. One who turns life into a model of worship, service, and morality Such a person is a true Shi‘a of Ali (a.s)—and such a path guarantees the salvation of humankind. A Call to All Humanity This hadith is not a narrow sectarian claim—it is a call to moral unity, justice, and divine knowledge. Let us: • Illuminate the world with the character of Ali (a.s) • Reawaken the human spirit • Become the true heirs of justice, love, wisdom, and worship ✅ This is salvation. This is the true and ultimate success. Lesson Four: Shi‘ism A Spiritual and Intellectual Journey from Origin to Destination قالَ الإمامُ عَلىٌّ عليه السلام: إِنَّ اللّه َ، عز و جل، إطَّلَعَ عَلَى الاَرْضِ، فَاخْتارَنا وَ اخْتارَ لَنا شيعَةً يَنْصُرُونَنا وَ يَفْرحُونَ لِفَرَحِنا وَ يَحْزَنُونَ لِحُزْنِنا وَ يَبْذُلُونَ أَنْفُسَهُمْ وَ أمْوالَهُم فينا. أُولئِكَ مِنّا وَ مُعادِهِمْ إلَيْنا. Saying of Imam Ali (peace be upon him): “Indeed, Allah, the Almighty, looked upon the earth and selected us (Ahl al-Bayt), and He chose for us Shi‘a who aid us, rejoice at our joy, grieve at our sorrow, and sacrifice their lives and wealth in our cause. They are from us, and their ultimate return is to us.” (Bihār al-Anwār, vol. 68, p. 155) Explanation Throughout every era, humankind has faced the choice between truth and falsehood. The Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), chosen by Allah as beacons of guidance and standards of truth, have been presented in the Qur’an and Sunnah as the guarantors of salvation. This radiant statement by Imam Ali (a.s.) perfectly encapsulates both the essence and final destination of Shi‘ism: 1. Divine Selection and the Continuity of Imamate This statement teaches us that the Ahl al-Bayt and their true followers are both chosen by Allah’s will and knowledge. This concept aligns with the Qur’anic verse: “Indeed, Allah has chosen Adam and Noah, and the family of Abraham and the family of ‘Imran above the worlds.” (Surah Āl ‘Imran, 3:33) Just as prophets and their families were divinely chosen, the system of Imamate is also based on divine selection. The true Shi‘a are followers of these divinely appointed personalities. 2. Shi‘ism: Not a Label, but a Moral Identity Imam Ali (a.s.) says: “They support us, rejoice in our joy, grieve in our sorrow, and sacrifice their lives and wealth for us.” These are the true identifiers of a Shi‘a: • Support – Not just affection, but standing up for truth. • Empathy – Sharing the emotions of the Ahl al-Bayt. • Sacrifice – Devoting one’s self and resources in their cause. Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq (a.s.) states: “Our Shi‘a are those who fear Allah and obey Him.” (al-Kāfī, vol. 2, p. 76) 3. The Destination of the Shi‘a: “They are from Us, and to Us is their return” This final part points toward the reward of those fortunate ones who truly supported the Ahl al-Bayt: • They become “from us” — part of the Ahl al-Bayt’s spiritual family. • Their final return and accountability are to the Ahl al-Bayt, meaning they will attain nearness, intercession, and divine pleasure. 4. Insights from Scholars Al-Sharīf al-Radī (r.a.), in his introduction to Nahj al-Balāgha, says: “A true Shi‘a is one who recognizes Ali and whose actions reflect his character.” Allāmah Muhammad Bāqir al-Majlisī (r.a.) says: “The identity of a Shi‘a is not just based on belief, but also on actions, ethics, and intentions.” 5. Contemporary Relevance of the Saying In today’s world dominated by materialism, selfishness, and violence, this narration reminds us: (a) Being Shi‘a is a Responsibility It is not enough to engage in mourning rituals, speeches, and slogans. One must actively practice truthfulness, justice, knowledge, and unity. (b) A Guide for Youth Today’s youth must: • Speak the truth • Stand against falsehood • Make knowledge their weapon • Take the lifestyle of the Ahl al-Bayt as their guide (c) Modern Understanding of Supporting Wilāyah • Raising voices for the oppressed • Supporting academic and religious institutions • Fostering unity in the Ummah • Using modern tools (media, education, think tanks) to spread the message of truth Conclusion This hadith of Imam Ali (a.s.) reveals the reality of being a Shi‘a—it is not merely a label, but a covenant, a way of life, and a spiritual status. The day we begin to see ourselves through the mirror of this narration, we may hope to be called “from us”—truly from the Ahl al-Bayt—and our “final return” will be toward those noble ones whom Allah has linked us to. Fifth Lesson: Identifying the Lovers and Enemies of Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.) The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his progeny) said: "O Ali! You are in Paradise, and so are your Shi‘a and those who love your Shi‘a. But your enemy and those who exaggerate (in belief) about you—they are in Hell." Explanation of the Hadith: Love and enmity towards Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) is not merely a historical or theological debate; it is a matter grounded in Qur’anic and rational principles. The Holy Qur’an identifies faith, righteous deeds, love for the Prophet’s kin, and sincerity as signs of attachment to the Ahl al-Bayt, whereas hatred, jealousy, hypocrisy, and oppression are indicators of enmity towards them. This lesson aims to clarify, in light of the Qur’an, Hadith, sayings of the Infallibles (a.s.), and views of Shi‘a scholars, the characteristics of the lovers and enemies of the Ahl al-Bayt. It also sheds light on the significance of this message in the contemporary era and its practical relevance for today’s youth. The love for Ahl al-Bayt is the essence of the Islamic faith. The Qur’an has declared the love for the Prophet’s family as the reward for his Prophethood. The Prophet (PBUH) introduced the Ahl al-Bayt as one of the two weighty trusts (“Thaqalayn”) and affirmed that adherence to them ensures guidance. Historically, love or hostility toward Ahl al-Bayt has not been a mere emotional or sectarian issue, but a comprehensive reality encompassing knowledge, action, and ethics. The goal of this lesson is to help us recognize, through Qur’anic guidance, who the true lovers and adversaries of Ahl al-Bayt are—and how this recognition applies to our time. Qur’anic Characteristics of the Lovers of Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.) • Faith and Righteous Deeds “Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds—they are the best of creatures” This verse has been interpreted in many traditions (e.g., by Ibn Abbas and others) to refer to Imam Ali (a.s.) and his Shi‘a. True Shi‘ism is not merely a verbal claim of love for Ali (a.s.), but it is substantiated by faith and righteous action. • Love for the Prophet’s Kin (Mawaddat al-Qurba) “Say, I do not ask of you any reward for it except love for [my] near relatives” Loving the Ahl al-Bayt is a Qur’anic obligation. Imam Shafi‘i said: “If loving the family of Muhammad is considered Rafidism (being Shi‘a), then let all creation bear witness that I am a Rafidhi.” • Piety, Patience, and Benevolence The Qur’an describes the traits of true believers: “[They are] those who establish prayer… and repel evil with good…” True lovers of Ahl al-Bayt are those who embody patience, piety, and moral excellence. Qur’anic Characteristics of the Enemies of Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.) • Hypocrisy and Spiritual Disease “In their hearts is a disease…” This verse refers to those who profess faith verbally but harbor malice in their hearts. Enemies of Ahl al-Bayt often appear outwardly Islamic but conceal deep-rooted hatred. • Causing Harm to the Prophet and His Family “Indeed, those who hurt Allah and His Messenger—Allah has cursed them…” Hurting the Ahl al-Bayt is, in essence, harming the Prophet and incurring divine wrath. • Turning Away from the Path of God “[They are] those who hinder [others] from the path of Allah…” Opposition to Ahl al-Bayt equates to diverting others from the divine path. ■ Saying of Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq (a.s.): “Our true Shi‘a are those who emulate us in piety and diligence, and who are well-versed in what is lawful and unlawful in God’s religion.” ■ Lessons for the Contemporary Era: • Making Love a Rational and Practical Path Modern youth must not reduce their love for Ahl al-Bayt to mere slogans or rituals. Instead, they should embrace this love through knowledge, character, sincerity, and sacrifice. A true lover is one who embodies the ethics and conduct of the Ahl al-Bayt. • Avoiding Extremism and Sectarianism True love does not mean exaggeration or hatred for others. Anyone who considers Ali (a.s.) divine or attributes divine qualities to him contradicts the Qur’an and Sunnah. • Unity through Devotional Love Love for the Ahl al-Bayt should become a means of uniting Muslims—not dividing them. The Ahl al-Bayt were themselves champions of unity and brotherhood. • A Practical Model of Wilayah If in politics, society, and individual life we embody the justice of Ali (a.s.), the knowledge of Husayn (a.s.), the forbearance of Hasan (a.s.), the worship of Sajjad (a.s.), the truthfulness of al-Baqir (a.s.), the wisdom of al-Sadiq (a.s.), the generosity of al-Kazim (a.s.), the contentment of al-Ridha (a.s.), the asceticism of al-Taqi (a.s.), the ethics of al-Naqi (a.s.), the piety of al-Askari (a.s.), and the anticipation of al-Mahdi (a.s.)—then this is the truest expression of love. ■ Conclusion: Love for Ahl al-Bayt is the spirit of religion, but it demands obedience, emulation, and a life of action. The true lover is one who purifies himself from hatred, hypocrisy, and injustice. And the enemy is not merely hostile to Ali (a.s.), but is severed from divine guidance altogether. This is why the Prophet (PBUH) stated: “O Ali! You, your Shi‘a, and those who love your Shi‘a will be in Paradise. But your enemy and those who exaggerate (about you) will be in Hell.” Lesson Six: The Superiority of Shia كانَ اَميرُالمُؤمِنينَ عليه السلام يَقُولُ: إنَّ أهْلَ الْجَنَّةِ يَنْظُرُونَ اِلى مَنازِلَ شيعَتِنا كَما يَنْظُرُ الاْءنْسانُ اِلَى الْكَواكِبِ. Imam Ali (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed, the people of Paradise will look at the ranks of our Shia as a person looks at the shining stars in the sky." Explanation of the Hadith: Imam Ali (peace be upon him)'s statement and its impact help us understand that the superiority of Shia is not only in this world but their status in the hereafter is also elevated. For the youth, this is a significant message to strengthen their faith, ethics, and knowledge so that they succeed not only in this world but also achieve a high position in the hereafter in accordance with Allah's will. The superiority of Shia is based on several important spiritual and practical principles, which are linked to the teachings of the Quran, Hadith, and the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them). The main reasons for the superiority of Shia are as follows: • Connection to Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) Shia Muslims believe that the status of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) and his family is highly esteemed by Allah. The Quran mentions the purity and sanctity of Ahl al-Bayt, as stated in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:33): "Indeed, Allah intends to remove impurity from you, O Ahl al-Bayt, and to purify you with a thorough purification." Allah has purified Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) from all impurities, and this status is a source of pride for Shia Muslims. • Strengthening of Faith In Shia belief, the concept of Wilayah (authority) and Imamate (leadership) of Imam Ali (peace be upon him) holds central importance. Imam Ali (peace be upon him) and the Imams (peace be upon them) after him are considered chosen by Allah as guides for spiritual leadership. Shia Muslims believe that the Imams (peace be upon them) were not only political leaders but also sources of spiritual guidance and divine direction. • Adherence to Justice and Truth Another reason for the superiority of Shia Muslims is their commitment to justice and truth. Imam Ali (peace be upon him) always made decisions based on justice and prioritized righteousness and truth in his life. Shia Muslims strive to follow his teachings, living their lives based on moral values and truth. • A Thirst for Knowledge Imam Ali (peace be upon him) regarded knowledge as the greatest treasure, saying: "Knowledge is better than wealth because knowledge will guide you wherever you go, while wealth will only keep you where it is." The superiority of Shia Muslims also lies in their emphasis on knowledge, as they view it as a crucial pillar upon which they aim for success in both religion and worldly matters. • A High Status in Paradise Imam Ali (peace be upon him) and his Shia followers will have a high position in Paradise, as mentioned in a Hadith: "The people of Paradise will look at the ranks of our Shia as a person looks at the shining stars in the sky." According to this Hadith, the status of Shia Muslims in the hereafter will be exceedingly elevated. • Seeking Allah’s Pleasure The most significant reason for the superiority of Shia Muslims is that all their actions are intended to seek Allah's pleasure. Imam Ali (peace be upon him) and the other Imams (peace be upon them) always prioritized seeking Allah’s pleasure in all their deeds. Shia Muslims also strive to follow the same path, which elevates their status in the sight of Allah. • Adherence to Social Principles The superiority of Shia Muslims is also reflected in their commitment to ethical principles, communal rights, and service to humanity. Imam Ali (peace be upon him) served the public throughout his life and promoted social justice and fairness in his time. Conclusion: The superiority of Shia Muslims is not only because they follow Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them), but also because they adhere to the principles of faith, ethics, knowledge, truth, and justice. All their actions are aimed at attaining Allah’s pleasure, and this is the true reason for their superiority.
